Made of aramid fiber or aluminized carbon, the thin aluminum foil that covers each fiber reflects infrared radiation, thereby directing radiant heat outward. It also prevents molten metal spatter from adhering, causing it to bead up on the clothing before sliding to the ground.

Most garments in this category feature an inner lining that provides double thermal insulation. Not only by superimposing protective materials, but also by creating an air mattress between the 2 layers of fabric that provides additional insulation. Under certain conditions, these garments can withstand heat of up to 3000 F.
